YOGA AND THEATRE: AN UNUSUAL ENCOUNTER
The physical work, together with breathing and voice exercises (Yoga & Voice techniques), combined with the practice of the theater takes us to the experience of a creative symbiosis able to produce the right energy and harmony for a serene and playful approach on personal conflicts and social tensions that we are experiencing every day. Through vocal and theater improvisations we rediscover a deeper and free relationship with our imagination the pleasure of expressing our fantastic imagination through the body.
WHAT IS YOGA & VOICE?
Yoga & Voice combines Yoga practice with breathing and voice exercises, as well as with the practice of meditation. The method offers appropriate exercises for our individual different physiologies of voice, intonation exercises, research of spontaneous and individual sound, speaking and singing techniques, chanting of mantras and traditional songs from different countries.
WHAT IS COMMEDIA DELL’ARTE?
The Commedia dell’Arte is a theater of archetypes: the avaricious and greedy old Pantalone, the pedantic and ridiculous Doctor, the violence obsessed Captain Spaventa, the naive and sly Harlequin, it represent the nucleus of a humanity whose contradictions are always present in our daily lives. The Commedia dell’Arte is however not only a male embossed theater. When women historically arrived on the scene playing female roles once performed only by men, they changed considerably and for good the rules of the theater and of the society. In the sixteenth century already actresses brought on stage the theme of love and sensuality, they talked for the first time “in public” of the innermost feelings of women and men as love and freedom and about the decisions that a woman is forced to take during her life. When women came onto the scene they changed the genre and style of the theater from male to female by bringing with them the rainbow of the whole human emotional world and their nuances.
WHAT IS THE MEANING OF COMMEDIA DELL’ARTE TODAY?
First of all we look at the Commedia dell’Arte as a medium to look with a ‘laughing smile’ on the world and ourselves, preserving the serenity of spirit and body health. This is precisely why we need to combine theater and Yoga: through the union of these two practices, we seek a way of expression in which body and spirit are no longer and in any way separated but instead in communication with harmony and through the use of our creative voice, our imagination, meditation and our human skill to play. Through recognizing the archetypes imposing to our living mostly unpleasant patterns and conflicts and bringing them on stage – after having defused the negativity through Yoga and meditation – we produce, through the ‘laughing smile’, a cathartic process of liberation that doesen’t abstract ourselves from the society and from the present but gives us a methode to deal with them in a more serene way.
