Clown and Commedia dell’Arte
a crazy elective affinities
A one-week workshop to full immersion into the Clown and Commedia dell’Arte world! The Commedia dell’Arte is a theater of grotesque, of power, of love, of evil pranks and intrigue, of human stupidity, of passion.
And the Clown? Who is the Clown? You can say: A clown is a performer in a circus who wears funny clothes and bright make-up, and does silly things in order to make people laugh.
Not really good. I prefer: A Clown is a performer who often reflects the humour and/or frailty of the human condition.
In this sense, the clown proves to be the grandson of Commedia and its true heritage (Jacques Copeau).
In the first part of the workshop, we will focus on the discovery of our clown, our humour and our frailty. To show ones weaknesses is to accept to show oneself as one is, to seek authenticity. We will discover how much humorous fantasy and madness is in us.
In the second part of the workshop we organize what we have discovered in a story. The clowns get a name and a social position: Pantalone, Arlecchino, Dottore, Capitano, Colombina, Florindo and Beatrice. Rich and poor, servants and masters, broken and generous, bad and good, loving and revengeful human beings. All the world is stage: hardly any other theatrical genre corresponds better to this claim than the Commedia dell’Arte.
